about

“Desolation” was an unfinished track from the Desire sessions. Most of my songs tend to get built up in sections that I move around modularly, until the song becomes cohesive. “Desolation” was originally cut from the tracks that would go on to become a song called “Shark Eyes” from that album. The melody was so strong and so different that it was apparent it was a completely different track.

“Desolation” had such a hook to it that I would just get stuck looping it around and around and I finally just had to put the thing down and move on with Desire. I did sort of promise myself that if I ever picked it up again, I wouldn’t do anything with it until I could cut the hookiness of it with something really substantial lyrically. It was the catchiest thing I’ve ever come up and I just didn’t want to pair that with something sentimental or light.

“Desolation” is about this ecological quicksand that we’ve found ourselves in, but it’s also kind of more than that I think. Greta Thunberg had gotten me thinking about the future backward perspective of what’s happening to us ecologically right now, and that’s where the lyrics came from. Sort of a reflection of the discourse around what we see happening and why we’re so paralyzed from doing anything about it.

Then Covid happened and in a weird way, it was apparent that the same mechanisms of greed and misinformation were being leveraged again, and as you started to see the number of dead growing, it became apparent that this is a pattern we’re stuck in. It’s so note-for-note similar, it’s hard not to see it as intentional and masochistic and systemic.

lyrics

Too proud of words and shy for rage
Spellbound inside the final days
Our silver tongues
Had fallen dumb
Now drunk on our delirium

Defying caution as the warnings came
We resolved to absolve ourselves of blame
And all along
We knew it wrong
Yet we danced into oblivion

Now, the rising tide obstructs the sun
Now the end is said and done
We’ve become
Our desolation
Now, capacity is overrun
Suffering has just begun
We’ve become
Our desolation

As our fate sharpened into view
Some yet denied what others knew
Ever petulant
Ever ignorant
The proud held fast, belligerent

Dire warnings were dismissed as haste
Logic and facts argued with faith
As avarice ran
Through exhausted land
With eyes darker than obsidian

Now, the rising tide obstructs the sun
Now the end is said and done
We’ve become
Our desolation
Now, capacity is overrun
Suffering has just begun
We’ve become
Our desolation
